Movie Review: The Little Mermaid (2018

Jennifer Fanea, Managing Editor

This fascinating drama fantasy is a remake based on the story of the animated princess Ariel in The Little Mermaid of 1989. However, the 2018 version is composed of non-animated characters. The plot is actually a flashback of an older woman telling the story of a young girl who gave her soul away to be human, but with a catch. The mermaid, Elizabeth, would be under complete control and ownership of the antagonist also managed the circus. Elizabeth along with a beast-like character, and a fortune-telling woman are required to obey their master. However, Elizabeth with the help of her friends, a young male reporter who Elizabeth falls in love with, and his niece who has a health condition help fight against the antagonist.

Overall, I enjoyed watching the movie. However, I did not expect it to be as different as it was from the actual animation of the 1989 version of The Little Mermaid. Despite the diverseness of the plot, the characters were still well-picked and directed by the director Blake Harris. I would still prefer if a new movie with famous actors would recreate the Disney version of the movie.
